Luke writes as simple history, intending us to believe that Jesus ascended into heaven. Everything that needed to be done for salvation had been done and accepted by God. The disciples went on their way rejoicing because Jesus had promised to send His Spirit. Jesus went to a real heaven, and the Christian is already seated with Him in heavenly places. His ascension foreshadows the ascension of every believer. He is coming back. Until then He is presiding over the universe, ruling His church, and interceding as the great high priest for His people.
