Daniel has not returned with the others to rebuild Jerusalem, perhaps because of his age, but he is praying for the work. Prayer is the vital work of the church. By denying himself luxuries, Daniel identifies with the returnees who faced opposition and difficulties. We may feel discouraged in the work of the gospel so must do what Daniel does. He did not live to see the temple rebuilt, but prayers can be answered in generations to come.
