Israel wanted David to reign over them because he was of their own flesh. Why should we want Jesus to reign over us? He likewise became our flesh; fully man and able to sympathise with us when tempted, yet He is also God who can help us. Israel realised it was David who helped them when Saul was king, and it is Christ who wins battles for us. They also acknowledged it was God who said David would be their shepherd and prince. Through him they would know the Lord’s care. Jesus is a prince who cares for His people.
