Bible Text: 1 Samuel 9:1-10:16 | Preacher: James Allan | Series: 1 Samuel | The people had demanded a king, rejecting the Lord Himself. God gives them what they asked for. Saul was physically impressive and Israel wanted a king to fight their battles. There are some indications here that Saul would be a good spiritual leader, but he perhaps thought he needed to take Samuel a gift in order to buy favour, and also seems ignorant of who Samuel is. We know Saul will not be a good king, but God does use him to deliver Israel from the Philistines. The Spirit comes upon him to equip him for that task.
