Bible Text: Mark 2:18-22 | Preacher: James Allan | Series: Mark | The Pharisees asked why Jesus’ disciples did not fast. There was one fast required in the Jewish calendar but this seems to be regular fasting. The disciples of John fasted in keeping with John’s preaching, proclaiming a baptism of repentance. The knowledge of sin calls for mourning, which would include fasting. Jesus makes a simple point. He is the bridegroom, and weddings are not a time for mourning. Which of the two groups are we like? We may not be fasting but we may be mourning for sin. There is a right kind of mourning, but we must realise that the King has come.
