Smyrna was committed to the Roman emperor, and any Christian who would not worship a Roman god was submitted to persecution and poverty. There is encouragement for them in that these words come from Jesus Christ who rules everything from the beginning to the end; the persecution will be for a limited time; and He conquered death by His resurrection. The way to eternal life is being faithful unto death.
