Saul wanted to know everything would turn out OK but had no desire for God Himself. Saul had expelled mediums from the land, yet asks one to contact Samuel. There are indications that this is really Samuel, but that doesn’t make such things legitimate. The root of Saul’s concern was that the Philistines were against him, not that he had sinned. He receives no comfort; tomorrow he will die.
