The law of God had already made provision for the priests but Hophni and Phinehas were greedy for more. They also abused the women serving in the temple. Eli gives them a warning but doesn’t stop them. Eli is held responsible and accused of honouring his sons above God. Church discipline is not a punishment but is for the unrepentant to bring them to repentance. Not disciplining our children is the biggest disservice we can do them. There is also a warning for children. Eli did warn them but they wouldn’t listen. The absence of discipline ultimately led to the destruction of Hophni and Phinehas and the priestly line of Eli.
