It’s not baptism itself that makes the difference; the message of Romans so far has been justification by faith. Baptism and faith are assumed to go together. Paul is telling Christians to think about what their baptism meant. They have died, been buried and are raised with Christ. We share in all that is His. We live in a new realm where sin does not have authority over us. Our sanctification begins by understanding and believing what is true about us here.
